Canyon Lake, a gem located in Comal County, is witnessing remarkable growth, making it a sought-after destination in the San Antonio region.


Comal County, which proudly houses Canyon Lake, has been recognized as one of the top 10 fastest-growing counties in the United States, as per the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. Between July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022, the county’s population surged by an impressive 5.6%, welcoming 9,751 new residents.

  • The primary purpose of the lake is flood control, water conservation, and recreation. It also serves as a water supply reservoir.

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) played a pivotal role in the creation and management of Canyon Lake. The lake was constructed by the USACE in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

    Construction

  • The construction of Canyon Dam began in 1958 and was completed in 1964. The dam was built on the Guadalupe River to control potential flooding downstream.

  • Recreation: Beyond its primary functions, the USACE also developed recreational areas around the lake. Today, there are several parks around the lake that offer camping, boating, fishing, and other recreational activities.
